Verbatimus — Privacy Policy

Effective August 4, 2026

The short version: if you use Verbatimus to learn, it collects nothing — everything stays on your device. If your School holds a paid licence — or you do, as an independent teacher — the app makes one small, occasional connection to us to verify and renew that licence. It sends only the licence key, never anything about learners.

This policy is specific to Verbatimus and supplements the Low Battery Studios privacy policy. Where they differ about Verbatimus, this policy applies.

What stays on your device

Verbatimus is local-first. All of your learning — the verbs you study, your progress, streaks, achievements, settings, custom lists, and reminders — is stored in a database on your device. It stays there, under your control, and is never sent to us. There are no accounts and no logins.

The one thing the app sends: licence verification

A device set up under a school licence holds a signed school key. So the licence can renew automatically, the app sends that key back to us near its expiry (typically once every few weeks, when the app is opened). A device used for personal learning never makes this connection.

The school key contains, and the request sends, only:

Our server uses it to confirm the subscription is active and to return a renewed key. As with any internet request, our host also receives your device's IP address to answer it. No student or teacher information, and nothing about anyone's learning, is ever sent.

When your School buys a licence

If your School buys a licence, checkout is handled by Stripe. At checkout you enter your School's name and your email. Straight after payment, our server reads that Stripe session to issue your first key on-screen and — as a convenience — email a copy to the address you used. That email is sent through Resend, our email provider. The buyer's name, email, and payment status are seen only to complete the purchase and deliver the key; we do not use them for marketing.

If you ask us to re-send your key

On Manage your licence you can type the email address a licence was bought with. We use it once, to look up the matching subscription in Stripe and email a fresh key through Resend. The key only ever goes to the address Stripe already holds on file — never to the address that was typed, so the form cannot be used to send someone else's key anywhere. We do not store what you type, add it to any list, or tell the page whether it matched a licence. We record the time of the last re-send against the subscription and refuse to send again for a few minutes, so repeated requests don't turn into repeated emails.

Who processes it

The licence endpoint runs on Vercel, which hosts it for us. To check or set up the subscription, our server asks Stripe, our payments provider; the key email is sent via Resend. Each acts only as our service provider to run the licence. We do not sell your data, share it for advertising, use analytics, or track you across apps or websites.

What we keep

We do not store your school key or build any profile from it. Our host may keep short-lived technical request logs (which can include IP addresses) as part of normal operation; we do not use them to identify or track learners. Payments are handled by Stripe under its own terms and privacy policy — we never see or store your card details.

Lawful basis (for users in the UK / EU)

Where UK/EU data protection law applies, we process the school key to perform the licence agreement with your School (performance of a contract). The information involved is about the School's licence, not about individual learners.

Children's privacy

Verbatimus collects no personal data from learners of any age, including children — a learner's activity never leaves the device. The only information the app transmits is the School's own licence key, which contains no student information.

Your choices

Your local data is yours: use Settings → Reset progress, or uninstall the app, to remove it from the device. A School can end the licence connection by cancelling its subscription. To ask about this policy or make a data request, email us below.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Verbatimus evolves. Changes appear here with a new effective date, and we'll aim to surface a short notice in the app.
